Cityscapes

My 2nd graders have been making landscapes and cityscapes. After discussing skylines, we folded our paper, and using watercolor crayons made skylines on the top, and by spraying the completed papers with water and folding, we had a good example of reflection.

snowflakes

Continuing with the cold weather my 3rd graders and I experimented with diffusion paper to put a new twist on cutting out snowflakes.

Snowy Day

This little girl made herself a "snow angel" and she remembered tracks in the snow too!
I lead this project in order to be able to discuss proportion and other drawing skills. This was pretty typical of my kindergart students. Not too shabby.
About the time I accused this boy of not following directions, he informed me that he was inside, drinking hot chocolate. Yep. I can see it now.

I wanted to work on some basic people drawing skills with my Kindergarten, and decided to use the cold weather to my advantage. After hearing Ezra Jack Keat's "The Snowy Day" we made pictures of how we dress up for the snow.

More Masks

Love the way my 3rd graders finished up our mask unit. Great paint jobs really can finish off a project well.

YEA KIDDOS!

Every year, the third and fourth graders in Metro Nashville are given the interesting opportunity to design an "ad" which promotes recycling for a cleaner city. Two entries from every participating school typically get their work enlarged and posted to the side of a trash truck for all to see until May. I think it is a great opportunity to not only promote our art program, but to teach the students about the many ways that one can use their talents to enrich the city in which they live. This year, I entered 2 of my 4th grade boys, and they both got their work on a truck.

Masks-3rd grade

I LOOOOVE the 3rd grade mask unit. Even the most hesitant artist finds themselves kinda into the masks. They are so expressive, and even the ugly ones are kinda cute. We made a paper echo mask (functional) and a clay mask (decorative). This unit is not only fun, it forces students to review a lot of their previously taught skills, and is a great way for me to talk about contrast of colors with them.
